<p>Silverado Canyon Gold Mine Claim Silverado Mine in Lion Hill District, between Ophir and Mercur in Tooele, Utah. Mercur was the gold producer for Utah for almost 90 years. Their output dwarfed even Kennecott in Gold and Silver values. Massive, massive mines covered all of Mercur canyon. Barrick Mining Company still owns the property and actively worked the site until the late 1990s. Just two canyons over is Ophir. Another recognized producer of huge gold and silver values that ran well into the 1970s. Both were huge producers in thier day and made many men into millionaires. Squashed right between these two behemoths is Silverado Canyon. Its an old canyon that had mines that were called old in 1896. Thanks to DOGM &#8220;reclaimation&#8221; most of this history and the mines have been lost. However, careful research and on the ground work has found a few signifigant old claims in this beautiful canyon. This is the first one, and a very interesting one indeed. This auction is for the &#8220;Silverado&#8221; lode claim. This claim is nestled just a short way up Silverado Canyon. Its not an easy find, but if you know where you are going, its simple enough. There were a few shafts associated with this site that have been backfilled. However the main adit is still in place. It is still connected to the shafts inside and there is quite a bit of tunnel to explore. There is some rich ore here and there has been value established as evidenced by the size of the door that was in place in front as seen in the images. There was a lot of work done here as is evidenced by the build ups that are still in place. Just across the canyon from the mines is an old cabin that is in really good condition. It dates back to about 1920 evidenced by construction and condition. The main adit is the main entrance to the mine. Old newspapers from the Salt Lake Digital newspapers indicate that the adit runs for 480 feet strait east, then splits with the northern drift running 1600 feet under the shafts that have been sunk on heavy silver deposits. The adit is in remarkable condition and has been gated by the DOGM. This is a good thing as it is a lot of work to secure your site from the general public. In this case the gate is already there and you can modify it to fit your needs. We have used DOGM gates extensively by adding hinges and lock points to allow for easy but secure access. The adit is very solid and has no signs of sagging or depression. We only followed the adit in for a few feet, enough to get pics and a feel for the construction. It appeared to run back quite a fair distance. I would recommend some digging out of the dirt fill that has been washing into the opening. BLM documents show this area as claimed in 1904, and claimed continuously until 1931, it was relocated in 1967 and held until 1984. We do have a USGS report on the area that touts it has having extensive reserves of very rich silver with equal parts of gold from the base of the canyon up through the Lion Hill area. There is a lot of patented land in the area and this mine is not on patented land, however it is near patented sites. Another item of interest is that Rio Tinto has been showing a lot of interest in the area recently. The reportedly offered the owner of the Ophir hill mine $75 million for his property that encompasses about 700 acres. The claim site consists of 20 acres of land encompassing the main mine camp site, and the aforementioned diggings. This site is only about a mile off of the main road, up a narrow but well maintained dirt road. The worst thing that you are going to find in the area is rocky mountain pin stripes from the trees and bushes that reach in over the road. This auction is for 1 (one) lode claim. Total Acreage is 20. We had full cell service out here with ATT almost all the way up the canyon. Enough so that I was posting pics to our Facebook page all day. This is a lode claim, otherwise known as a &#8220;hard rock&#8221; claim. A quick vocabulary lesson on mines and this auction: Adit &#8211; A horizontal access point to a mine. Shaft &#8211; A vertical access point into a mine. Winze &#8211; A vertical shaft, usually at an adit opening. Allows access to upper or lower levels Drift &#8211; An adit or inclined shaft that cuts off from the main adit or shaft. Maintenance on this site is $140.00, per claim, annually. Mining claims are being cracked down on under President Obama and there was just more land signed into wilderness. This claim is the only way to hold title to these mines. Mine Closures are rampant in Utah and soon there will not be any existing mines to claim, only dirt, where you have to post million dollar bonds to plant a shovel.
