Alaskan Land 5 Acres Alaska River Front Land Just out of College in the early 1970&#8242;s my brother and I decided to move to Alaska and homestead. Once there we found due to Native land claims there was no land open for homesteading. The only land available were five acre recreational sites. The price was $400.00 plus a residency and land improvement requirement. The state of Alaska allowed you to pay $40.00 a year for ten years and once you paid to have it surveyed they would give you title to the land. We built a cabin and went through the entire process and I have clear title to the land (see photos). The reason we selected this particular plot is that is it just a few minutes down river from Skwentna Alaska. Although this property is completely off the grid Skwentna is located across the river from a FAA weather station that has a gravel air strip. Mail is delivered to Skwentna once a week from Anchorage by a small air plane so it is easily accessible. My brother and I used to make trips to Anchorage a couple of times a year by boat to stock up on staples. The Skwentna river flows into the Yentna river which flows into the Susitna river which in turn flows into Cook inlet 25 miles from Anchorage. We lived there for a few years earning a living hunting, trapping and guiding until we both decided to take a break in the lower 48. When we left we had full intentions of returning in a few months however circumstances change and neither one of us has ever been back. Friends in the area wrote us that after a few years the roof of our cabin deteriorated and collapsed and I am sure after this forty years there is hardly a trace that we were there. We staked out the best five acres we could find and it is not exactly on the Skwentna river but about 100 yards up a little slough, on high ground, with sheltered water, away form the current of the main river. I have not been back there in nearly 40 years and things could have changed but we were helped select the location by a local resident that had lived there for 35 years before we arrived and he said it had not changed since he had been living there. This is a very remote area and to live there you have to be totally self sufficient. My brother and I are both in our 60&#8242;s, have no heirs, and therefore decided to sell our little piece of Alaska. I am sorry I have no photos of the place but am sure the deed and tax bill locations are enough to locate it on a map (see document photos).
