TROUT CREEK population 261 was proclaimed “Huckleberry Capital of Montana” by the state’s legislature in 1981. Set in a remote part of North Western Montana it has to be one of the most beautiful spots in the US. The small community sits on Hwy 200 just a few miles north of Thompson Falls named after David Thompson explorer and fur trader in the early 1800s. The majestic Clark Fork river runs through the valley beside Trout Creek and meets the waters of the Noxon Dam just beyond. Surrounded by mountains and Federal reserve it also has a unique climate and used to be known as ‘The Winter Valley’ where horses were kept during the cold months on account of its slightly warmer temperature. I first came across the property in an ad in Variety magazine, the film business trade paper in the mid 1990s. Very stressed out and working all hours as I then was, the ad said “Do you want to get away from it all?” My wife and I promptly flew up to Spokane and went to meet the Realtor. She took us up the 2 mile trail where we met the family that had built the cabin and were living in it as their home. We sat and watched the sun set over the mountains, fell in love with the place and bought it there and then. No power or water the owners used solar energy, propane and a water catchment system that collected the melted snow in a tank beside the house. So although lacking in utilities we saw many ways in the future to deal with this and the position of the property which in effect is the top of a small mountain seemed like paradise. Well, time marched on I became so busy I could’nt take the time to get up to the property and we were called back to the UK (where we hail from) as my wife and I had work over there to go to. To cut a long story short its not to be, the cabin has fallen into disrepair and the property needs some TLC and enthusiastic owners to bring it back to life and appreciate it for what it is. Meanwhile ATVs are fine as hunters sometimes use the trail to get into the huge forests beyond. Trout Creek is a very friendly town and is fairly active during the summer months as a vacation area as its situation by the river in the valley is extremely restful.
