It borders the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon National Park. There are nine developed campgrounds. As the most northern national forest in Arizona, the Kaibab (Pauite for &#8220;mountain laying down&#8221;) National Forest is located both to north and south of the Grand Canyon National Park (NP). However, the Kaibab National Forest has more to offer than a convenient camping location to the Grand Canyon. The Forest also offers visitors hiking, fishing, and auto tours, along with access to wonders the Grand Canyon (NP). The Kaibab National Forest reaches from Ponderosa pine covered mountains around Williams, Arizona to the Pinon and Juniper plains of Fredonia, Arizona. Although there are few natural bodies of water, there are several man-made lakes near Williams providing water for recreation, irrigation, and drinking water to the area. The largest of these lakes is Dogtown Lake, named for the Prairie Dog dogtown now submerged below the lake&#8217;s surface. The smallest, Cataract Lake, offers some of the best waterfowl viewing in the Forest. Canoers will enjoy White Horse Lake. And, only Kaibab Lake has a wheelchair friendly fishing pier. To reach the northern section of the Kaibab National Forest requires a drive through the Painted Desert and Marble Canyon. For those who think deserts are dry, dull places this drive will be an eye-opening experience. A rainbow of colors can be seen along the route, changing as daylight progresses into night. This route crosses the <a href="http://vacant-land.net/search.cfm?State=Colorado" class="kblinker" title="More about colorado &raquo;">Colorado</a> River at Lee Ferry, one of only three bridges that span this river. Watch for the &#8220;Chinese hat&#8221; formations, colorful Vermillion Cliffs, the rock houses of Rock House Valley, and stop at Valley View on State Route 89A for a breathtaking view. Northern Kaibab National Forest is an island surrounded by lower elevation plains. A thousand foot greater elevation provides the Kaibab with a thick mixed conifer forest dotted with huge alpine meadows. With much fewer visitors exploring this area, wildlife abounds. Here, mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and black bear are often seen. GRANT CANYON NATIONAL PARK A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size; 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. A 277 mile long (446 km) canyon separates the park into South and North Rims. The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is a mile-deep, (1.6 km) and creates a barrier that bisects the park. Even though the average distance across the canyon is only 10 miles/ 16 km, be aware that it is a five-hour drive of 215 miles/ 346 km between the park&#8217;s South Rim Village and the North Rim Village. Scenery, climate and vegetation are noticeably different between north and south rims because of differences in elevation. It is almost like having two parks in one and it takes time, planning and effort to be able to visit both sides of the Canyon in one trip. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open all year and is located on the &#8220;Arizona&#8221; side of the Canyon. The South Rim is closer to Interstate 40 and to the transportation centers of Williams, Flagstaff and Phoenix, Arizona. The South Rim also has a local airport and rail service. PRESCOTT NATIONAL FOREST Comprised of about 1.25 million acres, the Prescott borders three other National Forests in Arizona: Kaibab, Coconino, and Tonto. Roughly half of the forest lies west of the city of Prescott, Arizona, in the Juniper, Santa Maria, Sierra Prieta, and Bradshaw Mountains. The other half of the Forest lies east of Prescott and takes in the Black Hills, Mingus Mountain, Black Mesa, and the headwaters of the Verde River. Portions of the Prescott National Forest today are much the same are they were when Sam Miller panned for gold in Lynx Creek and was wounded by a cougar, or when General Crook&#8217;s flag fluttered over Palace Station. At the lowest elevation, the primary vegetation is of the Sonoran Desert type. As the elevation rises, chaparral becomes common, followed by pinon pine and juniper. Above that, Ponderosa pine dominates the landscape. Summer visitors seeking relief from the hot weather of the desert come to Prescott to camp, fish, picnic, hike and ride. The main recreation season generally runs from May to October; however, winter daytime temperatures are moderate and the Prescott National Forest can be enjoyed all year. The forest contains 10 campgrounds, 4 group reservation campgrounds, 7 picnic areas, and 2 group reservation picnic areas. Most of the developed recreation sites are located in the pines with 5 of the campgrounds and two of the picnic areas situated near man made lakes. Several developed sites offer barrier-free access for users experiencing disabilities. Nearly 450 miles of scenic trails for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, or mountain biking are offered on the Prescott National Forest. The forest also contains one National Recreational Trail (Granite Mountain Trail) and one National Historic Study trail (General Crook Trail). The mild climate allows the trails to be enjoyed year-round. For the more daring visitors, the forest offers opportunities for hang gliding, technical rock climbing and bouldering, whitewater rafting, and excellent mountain bicycling. The Prescott National Forest is guardian of more than 100,000 acres of wilderness represented by 8 wilderness areas. Of these, Granite Mountain Wilderness is the most popular because it is only 20 minutes from Prescott by paved road. Travel is limited to foot or horseback in wilderness areas. Currently, the forest is being challenged to increase its emphasis on wildfire and recreation management programs. Some sites are closed during the Winter months, and during wet weather, recreation sites may be closed to prevent resource damage. WUPATKI NATIONAL MONUMENT The Wupatki National Monument is a National Monument located in north-central Arizona, near Flagstaff. Rich in Native American ruins, the monument is administered by the National Park Service in close conjunction with the nearby Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Wupatki was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The many settlement sites scattered throughout the monument were built by the Ancient Pueblo People, more specifically the Sinagua, Cohonina, and Kayenta Anasazi. Wupatki was first inhabited around 500CE. A major population influx began soon after the eruption of Sunset Crater in the 11th century (between 1040–1100), which blanketed the area with volcanic ash; this improved agricultural productivity and the soil&#8217;s ability to retain water. By 1182, about 85 to 100 people lived at Wupatki Pueblo and by 1225, the site was permanently abandoned. It was a 100-room pueblo with a community room and ball court; making it the largest building for nearly fifty miles. There have also been nearby secondary structures uncovered, including two kivalike structures. Based on a careful survey of archaeological sites conducted in the 1980s, an estimated 2000 immigrants moved into the area during the century following the eruption. Agriculture was based mainly on corn and squash raised from the arid land without irrigation. In the Wupatki site, the residents harvested rain water due to the rarity of springs. Around 800 years ago, the Wupatki site was the largest pueblo around. The dwelling&#8217;s walls, many of which still stand, were constructed from flat red stones held together with mortar. Each settlement was constructed as a single building, sometimes with scores of rooms. The largest settlement on monument territory is the Wupatki Ruin, &#8220;Tall House&#8221; in the Hopi language, built around a natural rock outcropping. With over 100 rooms, this ruin is believed to be the area&#8217;s tallest and largest structure for its time period. The monument also contain ruins identified as a ball court, similar to the courts found in Meso-America and in the Hohokam ruins of southern Arizona; this is the northernmost example of this kind of structure. This site also contains a geological blowhole. Other major sites are Wukoki and The Citadel. Wupatki is called Anaasází Bikin in Navajo, which translates as Houses of the Enemies. Today Wupatki appears empty and abandoned. Though it is no longer physically occupied, Hopi believe the people who lived and died here remain as spiritual guardians. Stories of Wupatki are passed on among Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, and perhaps other tribes. Members of the Hopi Bear, Sand, Lizard, Rattlesnake, Water, Snow, and Katsina Clans return periodically to enrich their personal understanding of their clan history.
